FTV Blog 6: Music & film thoughts

I wonder if anybody has made a feature film inspired solely by a music album. I know music and film have a close relationship, but how direct has it been?
  • At one end of the spectrum is the music video; short movie clips
Maybe what I'm searching for is a movie that is not only based on the music but goes beyond the music video and presents a whole story and illustrates the imagery inspired by/created within a song.

  1. 'Pink Floyd The Wall'. It's an amazing film, and am pretty sure it qualifies in your criteria. I think on of the reasons the film is so strong is because it uses a concept album. However it would be difficult (although not impossible) to construct a film around a single album without a sense of repetition and consistency within it. 'Across the Universe' is another example by The Beatles, however this film is a musical and therefore may not be what you mean. The most perfect example (in my film knowledge) of what you are talking about is perhaps the film 'Love', produced and scored by Angels and Airwaves. The score is from their album titled Love.

  2. Alaneo I hadn't even finished writing this post! Haha I just wanted to get it up, published, and elaborate later.

But thanks for the comment. It's hard to explain what I mean... I guess I was just going to explore about the different types of soundtracks & movies and things. I agree, it would be almost impossible to find that balance between music video & scored soundtrack, trying to hold just enough story to avoid becoming an extended video clip/montage.

I did listen to 'The Wall' a few times around year 9 or 10 but I haven't seen the movie. I'll have to check out 'Love'.

I've seen 'Across the Universe' and to be honest I didn't like it much, although looking at it with this current idea in my head about an album-inspired film, that movie does come pretty close to what I'm trying to imagine--although it was very strange having the characters perform the songs within the story. Like you said, a musical. It would be interesting to know the original intentions of the filmmakers.

The album that sent my into this mess of creative speculation was 'Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends', by Coldplay. I don't know if you've heard it or like it but to me it has an incredible power to invoke vast imagery...although you'd have to come up with an actual story separately in order to make a film.

Lastly, Kanye West made a strange short film/extended music vid hybrid before he released 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy'. The movie is titled 'Runaway', one of the singles, but it also includes about half the songs in the album. There's no dialogue, it's a vague story, it's pretty cryptic and abstract. It's on YouTube.
